Brendan Greene, the creator of popular online multiplayer game PUBG, has announced that he will be launching a new NFT metaverse game this year. The game will allow players to buy, sell, and trade virtual assets, including unique non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that represent in-game items and characters. The NFT metaverse game market has been booming in recent months, with many projects raising millions of dollars in funding. Greene hopes to capitalize on this trend and offer players a unique gaming and investment experience. Details about the new game, including its name and platform, have not yet been released, but it is expected to generate significant buzz among NFT enthusiasts and gamers alike.
GGKrafton, the studio behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG, is set to launch a new Web3 metaverse game platform called Migaloo this year. The South Korean studio has partnered with Naver Z, an augmented reality firm, to create a joint venture company in North America that will focus on Migaloo’s development. The project will offer a “create-to-earn” system where users can create, buy, and sell in-game assets as non-fungible tokens or NFTs. Unlike Zuckerberg’s metaverse, Migaloo is developed by a AAA game studio, and little else is known about the project except it could resemble something like Roblox with NFTs.
Several Asian firms are developing games and experiences that leverage blockchain, further indicating the push towards Web3 game offerings in the region. Japanese game creator Square Enix and Nexon, a Japanese and South Korea-based game developer, have announced their own Web3 games. Razer, a Singapore-based firm, has launched a Web3 incubator, and WeMade, a South Korean firm, is planning to release some of its biggest titles with Web3 integrations.
Krafton’s partnership with Solana Labs to develop games on the Solana network, announced in March 2022, is another Web3 initiative, but no public updates have been provided since then.
With PUBG boasting 289 million monthly active players, and Naver Z a large tech firm with over $172 million in funding and 49 million monthly active users across three of its products, Migaloo’s launch this year is highly anticipated by the gaming community.
