Dwayne Johnson (also known as The Rock), a prominent American actor, and Oprah Winfrey, a well-known talk show host, have joined forces to launch an initiative aimed at assisting those affected by the devastating wildfires in Maui, Hawaii.
The People’s Fund of Maui, as it is called, is open to contributions from people all over the world and accepts donations in various cryptocurrencies.
Lending a Helping Hand with Crypto
The Rock took to Twitter to announce that the fund will provide financial support “directly to those who have been impacted by the recent wildfires.”
He specified that every adult resident of Lahaina and Kula, the regions hit hardest by the natural disaster, will be eligible to receive $1,200 per month “to assist them during the recovery period.”
The popular Hollywood actor, along with his partner Oprah Winfrey, initiated the campaign by donating $10 million and encouraged others to follow suit.
In addition to contributing with fiat currencies, individuals can also donate crypto assets. The People’s Fund of Maui accepts some of the largest cryptocurrencies in terms of market capitalization, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL), Polkadot (DOT), Polygon (MATIC), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and more.
The wildfires that occurred in Maui at the beginning of August were the deadliest in the United States in the past century. Over 100 lives were lost, and hundreds of people remain missing. The fires also caused extensive destruction to homes, buildings, and businesses, resulting in billions of dollars in damages.
Crypto’s Role in Supporting Good Causes
Besides the recent wildfires, 2023 has also seen devastating earthquakes. One such event struck Turkey and Syria in February, resulting in nearly 60,000 deaths and leaving many people homeless.
Crypto exchanges like Binance, Bybit, BitMEX, and Bitfinex were among those who provided aid packages to the affected regions. Binance even distributed $5 million worth of BNB to Turkish users affected by the earthquake.
